Wolverine!? Working with Venom!? Insanity!?
Ebayers should unload their copies of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 while they still can, because come July 29th, only hardcore collectors will pony up $40-$80 per copy. The rest of us will happily spend 1200 Microsoft Points (or $14.99 to PSN users- PS3 release date forthcoming) to download the classic fighter in all its three-on-three super comboed 2-D glory. On top of that, it’ll have something its predecessors lack; online play.
With the game’s release just weeks away, it seems like thousands of players can’t wait to get their fireball throwing mitts on it for a plethora of reasons. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is one of the greatest fighters on the market because of its lighting fast brawling and most importantly, a 56-character roster (unlocked from the beginning) that includes famous heroes from both universes. On the Marvel side, you have Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain America, Venom and Iron Man, among others. Capcom, meanwhile, recruited Ryu, Mega Man, Captain Commando, Chun-Li, Jill Valentine and a host of other franchise mascots. All of them possess unique special moves and insane combos that go from zero to 55 (or higher) in just a couple seconds, depending on how quick you are with a d-pad and face buttons. In case you’ve never experienced the madness, this video will bring you up to speed.
After reaching the character select screen, you can mix and match fighters to create three man teams. Then you can tag in/out at will and even call characters into a match to execute an assist maneuver. Now throw another player into the battle, and what ensues is an explosion of punches, slams, kicks and laser fire, all at the rapid pace of 60 blistering frames per second. Blink, and you’re liable to get your butt kicked.
In bringing MvC2 to Xbox 360/PS3, Capcom not only included online play (based on Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix’s superb net code), but also enhanced the visuals. Although the 2-D sprites don’t look nearly as sweet as SSFIITHDR’s beautiful looking characters, you have the option of accessing graphical filters that cut down on those jagged edges (check out the video below to see these filters in action). As for the gorgeous 3-D backgrounds, they return in all their glory, and the giant clown head still gives us the creeps.
At this point, all that’s left is for Capcom to release the game and we strongly suggest you download it. Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is one of the company’s most beloved fighters, and thanks to the inclusion of online play, destined to become an even bigger success. Plus, we always wanted to find out if The Incredible Hulk can beat up Dhalsim. Join us via Xbox Live/PlayStation Network to see who wins.
