Ahhh, GDC, the place where we can find out more about games we love. (Well, E3 has the same effect, but GDC is happening, um, right now.) Overnight, we gathered a few extra details on Sega's upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, slated to arrive this summer for WiiWare, Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
First off, Sonic will be carrying this adventure on his own. Knuckles and Tails won't show up (although we will get them in Episode 2, whenever Sega decides to release it. Secondly, the game will return to traditional Sonic play. No gimmicks, no crappy mini-games, just classic Sonic style. (Oh, and those cool maze bonus rounds? They're back!) The level design has a lot of inspiration from Sonic 2, so don't be surprised if the Casino Night stage makes some kind of return.
Episode 1 will have four zones with three stages each, and one of the boss battles you'll endure is Dr. Robotnik charging at you with a huge wrecking ball, as he did in the original Sonic game. However, this time around, he'll swing it with a full 360 degree swing, and you'll also need to avoid a ground smash. It's devastating.
Finally, along with a homing attack and spin dash, Sonic will adapt to new moves. However, these are being saved for future chapters in the series. So you'll have to wait...
Look for more on Sonic 4 in the weeks ahead. Can't wait!
