Welcome back to a special lover's edition of On the Download. Spend this Valentine’s Day weekend with the one you love – and buy him or her some gaming goodies. Here’s our weekly guide to help you out…
Several games came out for the service this week. Leading the pack is Sunsoft’s highly surprising sequel Blaster Master Overdrive, which has you once again blasting enemies both in and out of your customized off-road vehicle. Konami’s wacky Tomena Sanner is also available, letting you do all sorts of crazy stuff with the push of a button. If you like puzzle games, Hands-On Mobile’s Bloons may do the trick for you. Finally, if you’re all about family games, Hubert the Teddy Bear and his friends have an adventure for you, as they take part in their own Winter Games.
Meanwhile, on the Virtual Console front, Hudson Soft’s classic NES role-playing game Princess Tomato In the Salad Kingdom can be yours for 500 Wii points. If you’re a vegetarian, this game might just hit the spot.
The best of the bunch: Blaster Master Overdrive. There’s no question how awesome this game is. Find out more in our detailed review next week.
Once again, no Perfect Dark. But it’s coming in March, so don’t fret. Now, let’s get to this week’s update…
This week’s sole Xbox Live Arcade release is Darwinia +, a fun little strategy/arcade style game featuring hundreds of little digital people. Look for our final take on it sometime next week. If you prefer something a little more punctual in your games, Street Fighter IV is also available through Games On Demand – and worth every penny of its $29.99 price, if you ask us.
Other content for the week includes updates to Guitar Hero 5, Lips and Rock Band, a set of new Survivor Missions for Dark Void, the ability to buy souls in Dante’s Inferno (no, we’re not kidding), and a few new demos, including Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing, Dynasty Warriors Strikeforce and a multiplayer-supported Aliens Vs. Predator offering.
The best of the bunch: As cool as Darwinia + is, we’ve got to go with Aliens Vs. Predator. It’s simply too much fun to pass up before the retail game arrives next week. (Note: go with the alien. He’s just too much of an acid-spitting badass.)
When it comes to what you MUST download on the PlayStation Network this week, there’s no question. The demo for Heavy Rain, Sony’s mysterious choose-your-own-adventure style game, is a must-see. It’s downright bone-chilling seeing how your little actions guide the fate of some of these characters, while an Origami Killer lurks in the shadows. Good luck catching him…
As for other content, Trine is on sale this week for $9.99 (half off its $20 price – well worth it, too), and three classic PS One favorites are now available. Sim Theme Park, Populous: The Beginning and the filthy (in a fun way) Dirt Jockey are yours for $5.99 apiece.
In addition to them, several pieces of add-on content are available. Guitar Hero 5 and Rock Band updates are available, along with new LittleBigPlanet costumes (including a lovely Valentine’s Day themed one and a Chinese New Year get-up), the Dark Void Survivor Missions, the Dante’s Inferno Souls packs, a Fairytale Fights level pack (free of charge) and several new videos, including an After Burner Climax trailer and a preview of the first episode of The Tester. (Hal Sparks is the man. There, we said it.)
The best of the bunch: Heavy Rain. Go and get it.
And that’ll sum up this week’s downloading action, gang. We’ll see you next week, same RunDLC time, same RunDLC channel!
