PlayStation Move will give rise to numerous light gun shooters, and while we expect publishers to release new titles, these companies shouldn’t ignore the back catalogue of games from consoles past. The PSOne, in particular, had a handful of quality efforts that had us blasting bad guys with plastic guns for hours. Here now, are some PSOne light gunners that should make a comeback via PlayStation Network, complete with Move support.
Time Crisis
Back in the 90s, Namco competed with Sega for light gun supremacy with Time Crisis, a sweet shooter with frantic gunplay and a dramatic soundtrack. What separated this game from the competition was the ability to duck behind cover by pressing a foot pedal attached to the arcade cabinet; on PSOne, players tapped a button on the GunCon peripheral, or stepped on the system’s controller. It was fun in the arcades, almost as cool at home and we’d love to see it on PSN, with Move in hand to take out Wild Dog one last time. Action!
Area 51
We consider Atari’s Area 51 the McDonalds of arcade shooters. It’s easy to find, cheap and is best enjoyed at 2:00AM, preferably after or during a night of partying. Yes, it’s cheesy, but who can argue with blasting a bunch of aliens while infiltrating the mysterious military base? This is one of the most beloved arcade titles from the 90s, the game that still shows up in bars and pizza parlors, and we’d flip out if it came to PSN.
Point Blank
Most of these shooters feature violence, but Point Blank and its two sequels are safe for the entire family. Namco’s classic series lets players try their luck at numerous mini games, where killing terrorists takes a back seat to innocent target shooting. The publisher released a spin-off on DS, but using the stylus to fire wasn’t the same. That’s why it’s time to bring these babies back for the new Move generation.
Die Hard Trilogy
Die Hard Trilogy is an on-rails shooter that takes you through the first three films. That means you get to go yippie ki-yay on terrorists in Nakatomi Plaza, bad guys in Dulles Airport and bombs in NYC via taxi. Hey, while someone’s at it, we’ll also take its spin-off sequel, Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas, which plunges hero John McClane into Sin City.
Elemental Gearbolt
Being a hardcore gamer in the 90s meant owning or at least playing games by Working Designs, a company that helped bring Japanese games to American shores. Elemental Gearbolt was one of the more obscure titles, a light gun shooter that casts you as Tagami, who relives a catastrophic incident that destroyed the world. It’s sci-fi based, so you don’t need to worry about terrorists or even reloading your weapon (its rate of fire increases and decreases). In addition, you can switch between three unique attacks (Thunder Tiger, Blaze Phoenix and Water Snake) and level up. It just had a different vibe from the other PSOne shooters, and it would look great on PSN.
