Kirby's Adventure Review

Kirby's Adventure on Virtual Console

We have a feeling that Kirby could beat Joey Chestnut at the annual Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest.

Kirby’s Adventure’s old, even by Virtual Console standards, but if you somehow missed this light hearted and fun platform game, we strongly suggest spending the 500 Wii points to purchase it.

Originally released on the NES in 1992, the game stars (of course) Kirby, the puffball with an insatiable appetite.  After the nefarious King Dedede makes off with the Star Rod, Kirby vows to get it back, exploring Dream Land’s seven worlds and gobbling whatever enemy gets in his way.

Several features make the game enjoyable, starting with the simple but addictive gameplay.  Similar to Super Mario Bros., you jump over gaps, dodge obstacles and fight bosses, except that Kirby possesses the ability to not only float, but devour bad guys and then spit them out, using their digested carcasses as weapons.

That sounds disgusting, but the game is anything but, thanks to the cheery graphics and music.  Nintendo squeezed every bit of power from the NES to produce vibrant levels bursting with color and different types of critters.  On top of that, Kirby’s Adventure has an excellent soundtrack that you’ll hum soon after listening to it.

Bottom line, if you need a pick me up, play this video game.  Kirby’s Adventure is one of the Wii’s best 2-D adventures and belongs in your collection.  For $5, there’s no excuse to avoid it.
